this article isn't fair to the group resp plans.
it is not 100% flexible but many people got decent return from the plan and continue saving every year because of its inflexibility.
self direct resp is very flexible. it is so flexible that many people change their mind all the time. instead of contributing to resp they decided to buy a new tv. many people have loss $ from a self direct resp because they have made poor investment decision. group plan invest in bonds only. it is not for everyone but it is not a trap.
