AMEX® Account Protector Ultimate1 can protect your balance for up to $20,000 if you experience a loss like unemployment, illness or death. You can also receive two Monthly Payment* benefits toward your balance to mark special occasions, such as marriage, retirement or the birth of a child!
Coverage costs $0.99 per $100 of your current month’s outstanding balance** (plus applicable taxes) and is reduced to $0.69 per $100 after your 70th birthday.
The coverage amount may vary. Please note you can cancel this insurance at any time by calling Assurant®.
Your full balance can be paid, up to a maximum $20,000 for amount owing:
- Life: at time of death
- Accidental Death or Dismemberment: at time of accident causing loss
- Critical Illness: at time of diagnosis of heart attack, stroke, cancer and coronary artery disease (bypass surgery) and survive the initial diagnosis for at least 30 days
- Disability Requiring Hospitalization: on the date of hospitalization if hospitalized more than 24 hours due to accidental bodily injury or sickness
- Loss of Self-Employment Income: on the date of closure of business if unemployed for at least 90 days due to closure of business for financial reasons
Monthly Payments can be paid up to a maximum of $20,000 in cases of:
- Total Disability: if you are unable to work due to total disability, from date of total disability up to 90 days; if disabled for more than 90 consecutive days the remaining insured balance owing can be paid
- Positive Life Events: 2 Monthly Payments*, upon purchase of a home, marriage, child’s marriage, birth/adoption of a child, child enters college or university for the first time
- Involuntary Unemployment: at date of involuntary unemployment where you were working at least 25 hours per week with a single employer and Your involuntary unemployment continues beyond the 30-day Waiting Period; if involuntarily unemployed for more than 90 consecutive days the remaining insured balance owing can be paid
Coverage excludes:
- Critical Illness resulting from a Pre-Existing Condition
- Unemployment from seasonal, temporary, contract or part-time employment (less than 25 hours per week).
- Loss of self-employment income due to closure of business within 12 months of the effective date, willful or criminal misconduct; or voluntary forfeiture of wages or income.
- Disability, requiring Hospitalization in facilities for treatment of mental illness, aging, drug addiction, or alcoholism and in facilities outside of Canada or the United States.

**Outstanding balance equals the total amount owing on the account as of the statement date, comprised of the new balance plus any new installment balance from your participation in the Installment Program as indicated on your statement.
