BOOM! A plane took off.Joe, a tall and smart worker in the Maton panda Reserve, was shocked. There hadnever been planes here in this part of the forest before.
Bob, another worker with a scar on hisleft knee, ran up to him and shouted, “Have you seen the cubs? One of them,theyoungest,is not there!”
Joe responded, “Let’s check everywherebefore we accuse anyone.”
“Sure,” answered Bob.
So they checked everywhere in thebuilding, and even checked half of the forest.
“Do you think that the plane wasrelated to the missing of the panda cub?” Joe asked.
“What plane?” asked Bob.
“I forgot to tell you aboutthat,” said Joe. “There was a plane taking off before you told me about thepanda cub being missing.”
“Are you sure? There had neverbeen planes here before.” Bob said angrily.
“No, it really happened,’’ Joe saidnervously.
“No it didn’t!’’ shouted Bob.
“Yes it did!” Joe replied.
“No it didn’t!’’ Bob said again.
“Okay, let’s not get into an argument andcall the police of Cloc and the Maton police department,” Joe said calmly.
“I’ll call Jack and William,” Bob agreed.
Jack is the person that built the reserve and William is another worker
“Sure,” said Joe. “He will be furious if wedon’t tell him the news.”
“Oh and Joe, can you call Sarah too? Bobasked.(Sarah is Jack’s wife). “Sure, I almost forgot!” ExclaimedJoe.
Just about when they were about to leave, Bobstepped onto a piece of glass.“ Ow! Shouted Bob. I just stepped onto a piece ofglass!”
“Don’t throw it away.” Said Joe, who knew a littleabout forensics.
“It might have falling off of a brokenwindow.” replied Bob.
“Then let’s look for the window.” SuggestedJoe.
“We should call the police, Jack, Sarah andWilliam first,”Bob suggested.
“Right,” answered Joe.
After a few minutes, Bob hung up.
“No luck with Jack,” he said. “William is cominghere in an hour or two. He doesn’t believe that the plane took off, just likeme.”
“Sarah is sick with a bad case of the stomachflu. The police are going to be here in ten hours,” Joe said,knowing that thispart of the forest,which was in the center of the forest, was very far from anytown or village was much farther from a police department.
“Let’s look for the window you told meabout,” Joe murmured.
“Sure,” said Bob, and he walked away towardsthe adult pandas’ feeding room.
“Wait!” Exclaimed Joe. “There is a window onthe wall of the cubs’ room, where the robbery happened!”
“Right! Shouted Bob, who was looking veryexcited now that there were so many clues here.
“There’s a rope here!” Said Bob. “The thief must have usedit to climb up towards the window!”
“Joe backed up a few meters, and blurted out, “I can seethe broken window!” which made Bob more excited that he was basically dancingaround.
“Calm down,calm down,” Joe said to the younger worker,onlyto see that Bob was exhausted.
“You can get some rest,” said Joe. “Go to the restingroom, and I will see what clues I can figure out by myself.”
Eight hours later, Joe had found a feather, a diamond that he thought was fake,a red and partly white piece of fabric, and a lot of fragments of glass.
Joe kept looking for clues and he had to feed the pandas,herded them in for the night and studied the rope.He was so tired that he fellasleep immediately.
Three hours passed and police officer John and hisassistant Tom were in the forest near the Maton Panda Reserve.
“We better hurry up,” said John. “We’re late.”
“What happened?” asked Tom, who was in training to be apolice officer.
“There was a robbery of a panda cub in the Maton PandaReserve.” answered John. “There will be another group of police officersarriving here soon.”
In the meantime at the panda reserve, “Wake up!” shoutedBob,
whowas trying to wake Joe for the fourth time this night.
Joe opened his eyes a bit. “Where am I? Whathappened?” Then he remembered how he had passed out, how the plane took offwith a boom, how the panda cub was stolen, the broken window and the rope andother clues.
“Have the police arrived?” he asked.
“No they haven’t, but I’m sure they willsoon.” responded Bob.
“I’m going to call them again.” said Joe.
“I don’t think you need to do that.” saidBob.
In the police car…
“We are lost.” said Tom.
“No we aren’t. The GPS shows that we are 6.57kilometers away from the Maton Panda Reserve.” answered John.
When Joe suddenly heard sirens ringing outside, he knewthat the police were going to come. There was a blue car labeled Maton PoliceDepartment in blackish blue. John, the police chief, ran up and said,“What happened? Tell me every detail.”
Joe said, “It’s a long story. Sit down and I will tell you the whole thing.”
So John and Tom sat down andJoe told them the whole story, about the plane taking off, the panda cub beingstolen,
the clues and even how he passed out.
John said, “Hmm,this looks like thatthe thief came here, used the rope to climb up, shot or in some way broke thewindow, stole the cub, climbed back down, and then something caused him or herto run back to the plane or somewhere and escape an”
“Hi! Sorry that I was so late.”
Bob looked to see that was it the police,but it was Jack and William, who had promised to come to see the crime.
Suddenly a voice interrupted them . “I thinkI found something!” exclaimed John. Everyone came to look at him.
“As you can see, everybody,the glass windowthat was broken was shot.” He led everyone to the window. “This one was shotfirst.” He pointed to a hole on the top right corner on the window. “ This onewas shot second and this one was shot last.” He pointed to one on the middleleft and one on the bottom middle.
“Oh!” the crowd shouted out.
“And I have found a trapdoor!”
The people went silent.
“No,it is true.” said officer John.
“Where?” asked Bob.
John led everyone in the cubs’ room. He walked to thetop left corner the room.Then he pointed towards the floor. “It seems that thecriminal used the rope to climb up the wall, shot the window, climbed in,probably stuffed the panda in the tra”
“I found something!”
Everyone turned to look.
“It is a letter! Not just any letter! It is aletter asking for money! It says ‘please leave $5,000,000 at Treecut island byFebruary 28 or don’t get your panda cub back’’’
“ Treecut island is 6 kilometers away fromhere!” Jack blurted out.
“ Let’s examine the letter first.” said John.“ It looks like that the criminal has bad grammar because there should be aperiod in the end and there should be a ‘your’ before don’t. The crook also hasmessy handwriting because he or she has very little space between the words. Iam going to search it for fingerprints.”
John took out a small vial and sprinkled someof the powder inside onto the letter. “I found something! It is a whorlfingerprint.” He sprinkled some more of the powder onto the paper it coveredthe whole thing.
“ More fingerprints! He said. “ I’m going totake it back to the police station to examine it.
Suddenly, everyone seemed suspicious. Joe wastwitching, Jack was sweating,and Sarah was gasping. The only person that wasnot suspicious was William.
“There is something weird going on.” thoughtJohn.
He drove back to the police station with Tom.
“ Don’t you think something weird is goingon? He asked Tom.
“ It looks like that everyone is the criminalexcept William. He said.
“ That is what I think. Everyone issuspicious,even William.” he said with a serious voice.
At the panda reserve…
“Yay !” exclaimed Joe. “ John is going tofind the fingerprints, which is a very important clue in solving the crime.
“ Why?” asked Bob, who knew nothing aboutfingerprints and forensics.
“Because, everyone has a unique fingerprint,so it means that we have a chance of finding a suspect's fingerprint on therecord that they keep in the computer.” he answered.
“I want to try to open the trapdoor,even ifit doesn’t work.” said Bob.
“Sure, but I don’t think it will work.” Joeresponded.
Bob walked toward the trapdoor and pushed onit. Nothing happened. He tried again. Nothing. Then, it suddenly flew open andthe trapdoor hit the roof, only to land again with a big bang!.
Bob moved the door piece. Beneath it was aspring and a tunnel.
“ Joe, you have to see this! It’s a tunnel beneath thetrapdoor!” Bob shouted with the loudest voice he could manage.
“Are you joking!” shouted Joe.
“No I’m not! You really have to see this!”
“ Fine, I’m coming. But this better be true.”
Joe slowly walked to the trapdoor. When he saw it, he wasshocked.
“We have to call the police!” He said. “We need to knowwhat is beneath this!”
“ You’re right!” Bob shouted as he ran to his bag to lookfor his cell phone.
He quickly dialed 911 on the phone.
“Hello! Who are you?”
“John!” Bob called out, knowing the police chief’s voice.
“What?” John said.
“ I opened the trapdoor.” He mumbled. “It hit the roof andfeel back down, revealing a tunnel beneath it.”
“ Ok, I will be there in eleven hours.
After eleven hours…
John arrived at the reserve with a team of police officers and Tom. He walkedtowards the panda cub enclosure, where Bob and Joe were standing.
“Hi!” said Joe. “ Have you examined for fingerprints on theletter?”
“ Yes, and I found three fingerprints, but none of them wereidentified.” he said sadly.
“ Let’s examine the tunnel and find out where it leads us.” Bobsuggested.
“Right.” said Joe and John together.
Bob led everyone to the tunnel.
“ I brought so many people just to go in the tunnel. It might bedangerous. Here, Ethan a skilled climber and Alexander, his helper will usethis piece of rope which is 1.5 kilometers long will help them to reach the endof it.” said John.
“Here, everyone grab this end of the rope. Ethan andAlexander, you guys grab this end of the rope, which is split in half so youcan each grab an end of it.” Tom said.
So everyone listened to Tom’s instructions and lowered the twopeople into the tunnel.
“Good.” said Ethan. “Everything is okay in the tunnel.” Hesaid.
After Ethan and Alexander reached the end of the tunnel…
“I can see some light about 20 meters in front of us.” Ethan saidto Alexander.
“I can see it too.” Alexander said.
After they reached the end of the tunnel, they were both surprised atwhat they saw. They were in a house.
“I think we should sneak out and look at address ofthe house.” Ethan suggested.
“Sure, but we would have to be very careful.”Alexander said. “If that person that owns the house is the criminal, and he orshe spots us, then the plan would be ruined.”
“ There’s a window near here, but there is a dogover there and it is big.”
“ Then we will have to wait until it goes away, orwe have to lure it away by some food.”
Someone called the dog and it ran away with a bigwoof.
“ Good, but how do we sneak away?” Ethan asked.
“We will have to close the door to avoid peopleknowing that we were here before and escape.”
“ Maybe the person doesn’t know that there is atrapdoor here.”
“Quiet!” shouted Alexander. “ I hear something!”
There was a soft cry that almost sounded like apanda sound coming from a drawer straight out of the tunnel.
“It’s a panda! He said as he ran to thedrawer and took out a big fluffy panda cub.
“Who’s there?” an angry voice said.
“RUN! Shouted Ethan.
They ran back across the tunnel and back tothe panda reserve room.
“ So you found the panda!” a voice said. Itwas Joe.
It was a month after Ethan and Alexander found thepanda and the criminal was caught. It was William. The voice that wascalling ‘Who’s there?’ was a video recorder. William had pretended a cold buthe had really stolen the cub the day before and had used the trapdoor tunnel totransport it. He was arrested and sentenced for twenty years in jail.
The panda was taken care of by a vet and was healthy bynow.
The plane was just a loud helicopter that was stranded andtook off
againwith a big Boom!
The diamond and other stuff that were thought to be clueswere actually just rubbish.
