I don't usually post to one ethnic group, but this is for my ASIAN friends!! Someone I know has put out a call on behalf of a relative, Preston Dong, a 39-yr-old local father of two whose story was in last Saturday¡¯s Sun. Preston was just diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and needs to find a stem cell donor. However, as an Asian, Preston's prospects of a stem cell match are limited; even though worldwide there are 15 million registered donors, most of them are of white, northern-European extractions. Stem cell matches follow ethnic groups, and Asian donors are under-represented in the registry. Without a match Preston will have a short time to live, a reality that he shares with many other Asian leukemia patients. So, a special clinic has been scheduled for January 21 at the Aberdeen Centre, Richmond. Please pass on this message to your Chinese and other Asian friends; the process is simple and painless, and by getting more donors registered from all our ethnic groups, we can save lives, including Preston's. Find out if you're the One Match that someone needs to live.
