Vancouver has once again been named one of the three most livable cities in the world. If we are to continue to enjoy that status, we’ll need to pay attention to crime rates.
According to the Vancouver Board of Trade, “A 2005 report by the Progress Board of British Columbia shows that Greater Vancouver had the highest rate of property crime reported to police of any major metropolitan area in Canada or the United States.”
Through Realty Watch, you can make a difference!
The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, and the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board are poised to expand this program, by mid-June, to assist law enforcement agencies throughout the entire Lower Mainland.
Realty Watch works on two levels. First, we work in partnership with police to help in searches for missing children and seniors. We do this by sending ‘Fan-Outs’ to you to be on the look out for a child or adult matching a particular description. We issue ‘Fan-Outs’, via Touchbase, only if requested by police.
Realty Watch is also an ‘eyes and ears’ crime prevention program. It’s a cooperative effort between the police and the real estate profession to stop crime before it happens, a pro-active method of policing that enhances pre-existing crime prevention programs.
Most property crime happens weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., a time when members are often active in the community. You have a unique opportunity to observe any suspicious activity and become an extra set of eyes and ears for the police. You are also connected through cell phones and pagers across the entire Lower Mainland. That makes you a powerful mobile force.
Objectives:
The key to Realty Watch is crime prevention. It may not result in the apprehension of a criminal but its mere presence can make a thief think twice about committing a crime in a neighbourhood watched by REALTORS®.
The Realty Watch program has four objectives:
To promote crime prevention within the community;
To report and alert the local police of criminal or suspicious activities, and to search for missing children or seniors as requested by the police;
To promote the crime prevention unit of the local police force and enhance the efforts of other crime prevention organizations such as Neighbourhood Watch;
To uphold the image of the real estate profession within the community.
