I might be qualified to say something about this case. I was born on the same campus as 蒋国兵 had his undergraduate study, 清华大学. I was a student of 1978 of Dalian Marine College (now 大连海事大学), one year earlier than 蒋国兵 was. When 蒋国兵 entered 清华大学, my mother regained her professorship after 22 years. She was one of the professors fired by 清华大学 in 1957, involved in the so called “Anti Rightists” political movement. (Meanwhile our neighbor, 钱伟长, was downgraded from 1st-grade professor to 5th-grade.) Purdue University: I was the first student from the mainland China graduated from there in 1985, BS. 蒋国兵 had his Ph.D from the Purdue. It reminds me another person, named邓稼先, who passed away more than 10 years ago, 邓稼先. 邓稼先 had his Ph.D from Purdue physics department in the early 1950s. 邓稼先 was the pioneer for the China first nuke and devoted his life for it. 邓稼先 did not have a house in either USA or Canada, even not a car. How poor were those students in America then? My father used to share an apartment with 邓稼先 when they studied at Purdue Univ. in the later 1940s. So when my father left Purdue back to China before 邓稼先 (since 邓稼先 had his Ph.D study which took longer time), My father left his bicycle to 邓稼先, not a car, but a bicycle. Several years later, 邓稼先 bought some records for my father when he returned to China to compensate that bicycle. 邓稼先 had his BS degree from 西南联大, a heritage of 清华大学 during the World II. Now it is not hard to tell the difference: both graduated from 清华大学 and Ph.D from the Purdue Uinv. One founded the nuke China and dedicated his whole life to it. Another one had a house in Canada and contributed his life to nothing but himself, not to his wife, not to his children, not to his parents. Do not even mention to his country. It does not need to have further comparisons between these two grads from 清华大学 and Purdue Univ. All three persons were gone. 邓稼先 had cancer, which was directly derived from nuke test. 邓稼先 did not commit suicide when he suffered the pain from cancer. My mother passed away last year at 86 years old. She did not commit suicide under political pressure for 22 years. A lot people still remember she, a 清华大学 professor at her 47 years old, cleaned all restrooms and corridors during the Cultural Revolution with a man-style haircut. 蒋国兵 did commit suicide because he did not have a high income and glorious job. I agree that I should not write out the above paragraphs since 蒋国兵 had passed away. However, what I write here is not for a dead body, but for all human beings, above all, for those ordinary people who live in this side of the Pacific Ocean. If I really say anything to 蒋国兵, I would say “You are a piece of shame”. Some of his former classmates mentioned how 蒋国兵 liked to talk about philosophy and even about China development was. Stop there. The only thing 蒋国兵 loved was himself, not even his children. Do not blame anyone but himself. None of education system would teach people to commit suicide if he/she has a blue collar job. “The survivors are the best”. Do not stop here, even do not slow here.
