這場慘烈的特大車禍發生在周三（2月19日）中午前後，200多輛汽車在15號高速公路La Prairie區域發生猛烈碰撞。據現場目擊者稱，引發事故的竟是一陣大風。據悉，一陣突發的大風將聖勞倫斯河（St. Lawrence River）上的積雪卷起，並吹向高速公路方向，遮擋了駕駛員的視線。魁省交通部長Francois Bonnardel表示，盡管天氣晴朗，相關路段在事發前一小時內也曾進行過兩次除雪作業，人們在開車時遭遇強風吹雪，視線會突然受到遮擋，因此導致連環相撞。
