The Mary Tudor Pearl, is an intriguing story. This portrait of Mary Tudor circa 1554 (in the Society of Antiquaries) shows her wearing the most important jewel in the Spanish Crown. It is the Estanque blue diamond suspending a large natural pearl of 258.12 grains (64.5 carats). This pearl is frequently and wrongly referred to as The Peregrina Pearl which weighs 202.24 carats (50.56 carats). When Mary Married Philip II of Spain in 1554 she was seen wearing this great jewel. However The Peregrina Pearl was found in 1579 and Mary Tudor died in 1558. Philip did however buy The Peregrina Pearl in 1582 after Mary’s death and it remained in the Spanish Crown Jewels for over 200 years and belonged to 8 Kings of Spain
